There are numerous options for drug testing employees, from breath alcohol tests to hair follicle testing. Different drug tests can determine usage from the same day to up to three months before. Breath Alcohol Testing only registers alcohol levels, while oral fluid testing is for drug use. Breath alcohol testing is performed when someone is pulled over for a suspected DUI. Saliva swabbing is a very simple test. Usually, employers order one or both of these tests if they believe the employee is drinking or doing drugs on the job. Employers will also perform these tests on employees that have been in an accident. It is very important to alcohol and drug test the employee to prove whether or not they are under the influence of any substances.
Urine testing is the most common drug test that companies use to screen employees. This testing can detect alcohol and/ or drug usage within the previous three to five days. Also, it is the only testing that the federal government accepts as valid for drug testing on employees. Urine drug testing for employees is also the least expensive and therefore the most commonly used as pre-employment testing.

Although some prospective employees believe they can beat the drug testing, that is seldom true. Urine samples have to meet several specific requirements, including color, smell, liquidity, and temperature. A specimen from someone else is usually identified quickly, and the donor is notified immediately. Temperature is often the giveaway. Other things can be cheated on occasion, but temperature is almost always the requirement that indicates it is not the donor sample.
By testing the hair follicle, Soteria Labs can determine if the employee has taken any drugs within the past 90 days. This is a more specific drug testing on employees. The look-back period is longer than with the urine test and very specific. Although many people believe they can trick this test with shampoos, sprays, or colorants, they are misled. None of these things will change the hair follicle which reveals what the body has metabolized.
The best test depends on what the employer wants to know. If it is pre-employment drug testing on prospective employees, the five- or 10-panel urine test would usually be the recommendation so you can screen for the largest number of potential drugs. The employer can select if they want to add or remove alcohol and THC. If you allow your employees to drink and smoke marijuana on their time off, you may choose to exclude these tests from your panel. It is better to skip the tests altogether than to receive results and ignore part of them. Doing that will increase your liability if there is any type of incident.
