Drug Free Workplace (DFW) Policy

Compliance Programs

Small businesses are at more of a disadvantage when it comes to drug and alcohol in the workplace. They are less likely to have Drug-Free Workplace (DFW) policies implemented and are more likely to be an “employer of choice” for substance abusers. Individuals that cannot adhere to a DFW policy look for jobs at companies that don't have a policy in place. The cost of just one error caused by an impaired individual can cause devastating damage to a small business.

We encourage employers to implement programs that promote safety, health and well-being by helping businesses, schools, families, and communities with drug-free programs.

State workplace testing laws for drugs, alcohol, and marijuana, are a complex maze of statutes, regulations and court decisions. As a result, employers and service providers are being sued for not following state-specific laws. There are more than 600 state laws and regulations as well as 10,000+ court and agency decisions that impact private workplace drug testing programs. These laws change frequently and if you do not remain current and in compliance, you are at high risk of litigation, personal claims, impact of reputation, higher Workers' Compensation premiums, along with other financial penalties. Having a drug-free workplace is essential to the success of any business.

Employer Training

Employee education is essential in preventing substance abuse in the workplace that could result in liabilities such as injuries, or other safety and financial consequences. You want your employees to know that you support them and their health, and that help is available for individuals suffering from drug or alcohol abuse. It is important for employees to know the harmful effects of substance abuse and how it can affect not only their own safety, but the safety of their co-workers and possibly even customers. Through Soteria's partnership with Visify, we offer customized supervisor training courses.

Our Training Program will teach you:

  • How to be aware of legally sensitive areas.
  • How to recognize potential problems.
  • How to document in a systematic and fair manner.
  • How to act in a confidential way.
  • How to refer to appropriate services.
  • How to go about employee reintegration into the workplace.

The three most popular Supervisor/DER training programs are:

"Reasonable Suspicion Training for Supervisors (Non-DOT)"

"DOT Reasonable Suspicion Training for Supervisors"

"DOT Designated Employer Representative (DER) Training"
